I have noticed that more and more Americans, men, women, and teenagers alike, have all taken up running. Running at the gym, at the school track, at the park, or just around your neighborhood. They run to be fit, for the thrill, to be able to feel the power of their own bodies. But with so many causes out there, why not run for someone or something else? I have personally done four 5k’s, which I started off only walking, and the last few I have started to jog. I am doing another on April 28th at the Bronx Zoo to raise money for the Lions which I hope to be able to run. www.wcsrunforthewild.org. They offer the option to either run, or do the family fun walk. I enjoy the benefit of the physical activity and the rush I get when I finish, and at the same time I get to raise money that supports a great cause. I was not that active before I started doing the 5k at the Bronx Zoo, but the cause really motivated me to get in shape and do it for something I love. So if you have always wanted to be a runner and thought, “I could never do this”, think again. Anyone can be a runner, even me, who has asthma and is still slightly overweight. Start with something small, even if you do an event like the one at the Bronx Zoo that allows you to walk, and then work your way up to running. The next thing you know, you may be doing a half marathon, like the Diva http://www.runlikeadiva.com (which also offers a 5k)or a full marathon like the Hamptons Marathon, which also offers a full, half, or 5k. http://www.hamptonsmarathon.com/.
So whatever your reason is to run, do it for yourself. Do it to get your body into the best shape of your life. Your body mind and soul will thank you. And at the same time, you can help others by doing it for a great cause. Here are some other links to help you get started. Even if you just start off doing a walk, you are still doing better then everyone at home sitting on the couch. Get out there today!
